Fact-checkers and information integrity protectors are gathered in the Ghanaian capital, Accra for the latest edition of the Africa Fact-check summit.
The annual event is meant to foster collaboration and partnership among fact-checkers on the continent of Africa.
Africa Fact-check Summit 2024 is taking place at the University of Ghana from October 9 – 10, and it brings together representatives of fact-checking organizations and experts from across the continent under the leadership of the Africa Facts network, whose aim is to strengthen and elevate the practice of fact-checking and resilience-building on the continent.
The two-day event is co-hosted by Africa Check, alongside local partners FactSpace West Africa and Dubawa.
The theme for this year’s edition is “Countering Mis/Disinformation in Africa:
Challenges, Innovations, and Strategic Responses.
The organizers say this year’s meeting is crucial as it comes in a major election year, where about a dozen elections have either been held or are expected to be held on the continent, including in countries in transition.
Ghana is hosting the meeting ahead of its fiercely contested elections slated for December, which observers say has been marred by tensions fueled by mis and disinformation.
