Over 20 people have been reported killed in a stampede at a church prayer ceremony in the Liberian capital, Monrovia.
The incident on Wednesday happened at the end of a two-day prayer session, commonly known as Crusade, organized by a popular preacher, Apostol Abraham Kromah.
The event was hosted in a football pitch in New Kru Town, a suburb of Monrovia, and it attracted thousands of faithfuls, according to reports.
Reports added that the stampede occurred after a gang of robbers stormed the pitch and attacked worshipers with knives, causing panic.
Liberian President George Weah on Thursday declared three days of mourning and ordered an investigation into the incident.
The Liberian presidency also said the president is expected to visit the scene of the incident.
The Liberian police say they are investigating the incident and are yet to ascertain the exact number of casualties. But sources on the ground say up to 29 people have been reported dead.
Apostle Abraham Kromah, who runs the Word of Life Outreach International church in Liberia, is one of the most influential pastors in the country, where he is widely believed to possess extraordinary healing powers.
