After days of delay, ballot materials for Sierra Leone’s much anticipated general elections finally arrived in the country.
The airplane carrying pallets containing ballot papers and RRFs from South Africa landed at the Cargo Terminal in the Freetown International Airport in Lungi on Monday morning.
The Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) transported a group of journalists to witness the arrival and offloading of the contents which were then loaded into military trucks for deployment across the country.
Over 3 million Sierra Leoneans will vote in the June 24th Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Council elections.
The ECSL has come under pressure, particularly from the main opposition APC, which called for the resignation of Mohamed Konneh as its chair, alleging bias in favour of incumbent President Julius Maada Bio, among other claims.
The ECSL has dismissed the allegation.
A crucial meeting between the leadership of APC and the Police was scheduled for Monday over a request by the opposition for a peaceful protest against ECSL. It follows the expiry of a 72-hour ultimatum issued by APC.
