The military junta in Guinea has appointed veteran opposition politician Oury Bah as Prime Minister, following the abrupt dissolution last week of the administration of Bernard Goumou.
Mr Bah, popularly known as Bah Oury, was named on Tuesday.
The development comes after deadly protests this week called by trade unions over claims of high cost of living.
At least two people are reported to have died during the strike action that started on Monday.
There was widespread disruption in economic activities.
The new Prime Minister, an Economist, is expected to set up a new government within the coming days.
The junta may also be banking on his political experience to fix the country’s economic challenges which have led to mass dissatisfaction in the population. His appeal for suspension of the strike appears to have been heeded to as reports on Wednesday say the unionists have ordered the members to resume work on Thursday.
General Mamady Doumbouya came to power in September 2021, after ousting former President Alpha Condé.
His transition administration is expected to organize elections and return the country to civilian rule by the end of the year, in line with an agreement it reached with the sub regional grouping, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
