Greetings, distinguished senior colleagues and fellow practitioners.

I am Zachariah Azibo Kanu, managing partner at the Law Firm of Azibo Kanu and Partners, proudly coming before you today as a candidate for the esteemed position of Assistant General Secretary of our illustrious Sierra Leone Bar Association. It is with profound honour and privilege that I share my aspirations, values, and vision for our Secretariat.

Before I delve into my intentions, allow me a moment to express my deep gratitude for the invaluable mentorship and camaraderie I’ve experienced during my seven years as an active practitioner. This journey, which began in 2017 upon my admission to the Bar, has been marked by countless moments of growth and learning, thanks to the support and guidance of mentors like Mr. Centus Macauley. His mentorship has been instrumental in shaping my professional trajectory, for which I am eternally grateful.

My journey as a practitioner has taken me through the corridors of justice, from representing corporate entities in the Fast Track Commercial Court to advocating for the rights of vulnerable women in the Family Division of the High Court. Through these experiences, I have witnessed first-hand the challenges and triumphs of our legal community.

Colleagues, I come before you today not to make lofty promises but to offer a vision rooted in practicality and purpose. I have closely observed the workings of our Secretariat and recognise the strides made by past General Secretaries and Assistant General Secretaries. However, I also acknowledge that there is still much to be done, particularly in light of the current state of our Bar.

My candidacy for Assistant General Secretary is driven by a deep-seated desire to enhance the effectiveness and responsiveness of our Secretariat. If elected, I pledge to work tirelessly alongside the General Secretary to ensure that our Secretariat operates at the highest level of efficiency, meeting the diverse needs of our members with promptness and professionalism.

Furthermore, I am committed to prioritising the welfare of our members. Under the banner of a “Pro-Member Association Plan,” I will champion initiatives aimed at safeguarding and enhancing our members’ professional lives. Whether addressing grievances, providing support, or fostering a sense of community, I will strive to ensure that every member feels valued and supported by our association.

Colleagues, as your Assistant General Secretary, I offer not only my expertise but also my unwavering dedication to the betterment of our Association. Together, let us embark on a journey of progress and prosperity where every member can proudly proclaim their affiliation with the Sierra Leone Bar Association. Together, let us build a Bar Association that is truly representative of all of us and speaks with one voice.

In closing, I humbly seek your support and vote in the upcoming election. Together, let us chart a course towards a brighter future for our beloved Association and the legal profession as a whole.

Thank you for your attention.

May God bless the Sierra Leone Bar Association and the Republic of Sierra Leone.

Zachariah Azibo Kanu Esq.
