Africa’s largest carrier, Ethiopian Airlines, has resumed flight to Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, over a decade after it was halted.

The inaugural flight landed at the Roberts International Airport in Monrovia on Saturday, November 30, amid celebrations.

A special event marking the day was attended by officials from both Liberia and Ethiopian Airlines.

The airline in a statement said the move is part of efforts to promote economic integration between Liberia and Ethiopia, noting that it is also part of its plan to expand coverage of the continent in air transport.

“The resumption of services to Monrovia brings significant benefits, as it not only expands travel options for passengers but also plays a vital role in promoting economic integration between Ethiopia and Liberia,” the airline said in its statement.

“We are pleased to resume our flights to Monrovia, reinforcing our dedication to connecting Africa and promoting intra-African trade,” Mesfin Tasew, Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, was quoted in the statement.

The Monrovia routes will be operational three times a week, according to the statement.

With Saturday’s resumption of flight, Liberia becomes the 41st African country where Ethiopian is operating, according to the airline. It added that Monrovia also becomes the 63rd city on the continent where it is operating.

In May this year, Ethiopian began flying to the Sierra Leonean capital, Freetown, as part of this expansion drive.

The Freetown route is connected via Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, thrice a week.
