In March 2024, a strain of the circulating vaccine derived poliovirus type 2 was detected in a sewage system in Marbella, a slum in Freetown.

In response, the Sierra Leone government and its partners launched a nationwide supplementary vaccination campaign, as part of a synchronized exercise with five other neighbouring countries.
