    Sierra Leone: Persistent riverbed mining threatens livelihoods of communities around Rokel River

    Pujehun District is surrounded by several major water bodies and tributaries, including the Maleny River, Wanjie River, Moa River and the Atlantic Ocean, which stretches toward the Sierra Leone-Liberia border. Ten teams of young Sierra Leonean innovators competed for the best three spots in the country’s first ever Afrinnovate challenge.

A team of six youngsters from Kenema emerged winner of the top prize.

The event was part of an initiative by the Center for Advocacy and Sustainable Empowerment Sierra Leone (CASE SALONE), which entailed one year of training, mentorship and regional pitching competitions. And it is part of the Social Equity Programme of the Ghana-based Junior Achievement Africa supported by the Z Zurich Foundation.
