Veteran educationist and historian, Professor Joe A. D. Alie has been appointed as Chancellor of Eastern Technical University (ETU).

The appointment of the renowned historian and academic by President Julius Maada Bio was made through a letter dated June 8, 2026.

ETU is one of Sierra Leone’s public technical universities established under the University Act No. 5 of 2021. The Chancellor’s role is key for institutional reputation, fundraising, and maintaining links with government, industry, and alumni.

Prof. Alie brings to the university decades of scholarship and research, especially in Sierra Leonean history. His reputation is expected to strengthen ETU’s academic credibility and research profile.
As Chancellor, the elderly historian will serve as the titular head of the university, presiding over convocations and providing guidance to the university council and administration. His appointment reflects government’s emphasis on placing experienced academics in leadership roles to drive quality and development in technical education.

Prof. Alie’s appointment also marks a strategic move to reinforce academic leadership at ETU. With his background in history and academia, he is positioned to enhance the university’s vision of producing skilled, research-driven graduates for national development.
